Sweet Danny Boy was found stray... a few times. Animal control in Arlington had take him in for the last time and wasn't going to give him back to his owners w/o answers as to why he was emaciated. With cruelty charges looming they were able to show proof that they had taken the dog to the vet in the last two weeks so Animal Control was not able to pursue charges. They turned him over to the city without any contest. That is when a wonderful foster, Grace, stepped up to take in Danny for CCHS. Grace took Danny to the vet for a check up, HW test and vaccinations. The vet gave him prednisone to help stimulate his appetite but that didn't do any good. After 10 days of him taking only a few nibbles of his food (despite the fact that his foster mom could hear his stomach grumbling) we feared that something else was going on.

Grace brought Danny to our vet in Plano. Luck have it only two of the four vets were on staff that day (with one out on vacation and the other out sick) an already overwhelmed Dr Whetstone took in Sweet Danny Boy for a full exam. They ran blood work and examined him. The bloodwork came back with elevated white blood cell count and she felt a few odd lumps in his abdomen. No since in X-rays and a barium enema since what ever was in there was obviously the cause of the problem. Dr Whetstone had clients piling up in the lobby but didn't want Danny to suffer another night. She stayed after hours to do exploratory surgery on him because she was so worried about Danny's case.

When she opened him up she found a foreign object lodged in his intestines, a narrowed passage way in his intestines and a few odd spots on his intestines. She stopped and called CCHS to find out what we wanted to do. She said it could be cancer but it might be something random like a fungus. Uncertain of the cause of the intestinal issues, CCHS approved to proceed w/ the biopsy and intestinal repair. The results would be sent off to a lab and take a grueling week to find out the results. Dr Whetstone was able to take the narrowed section out and segmented it back together. She then removed the odd spots and the foreign body to send off to the lab as well. Danny was kept on the IV for the next 48 hours while we all held our breath

The next morning when the Dr arrived she was greeted with a happy, waggy Danny standing in his cage and ready to eat! She gave him a bowl of ID food and he gobbled it up!! He had four more meals that day and couldn't get enough!! We were all amazed that this quickly after surgery he was making such great progress! The same boy that turned his nose up at food just the day before was now begging for more! The Dr wanted to give him another day on the IV and cage rest before his release.

Friday afternoon they gave the word to release him! A wonderful home had been approved to adopt him in the mean time and was waiting on pins and needles. She is an RN and takes on sick, injured or senior dogs one at a time and nurses them until their last days. The stars all aligned for Sweet Danny Boy that day. It all seemed to good to be true! But it was all true, he was doing great, his family was there and ready to take him in w/ open arms and a few tears. They were aware that pending the results he might have weeks, a few months, maybe a year... or he could go on to live a long wonderful life. It would all depend on the results from the lab (expected to arrive by 4/19/11). His story touched their hearts and they knew he was meant to be with them through the good times and bad.

Attached are pics of Danny meeting his new family today at the vet. We thank you Grace for taking him into your home as a foster and being vigilant about his care. MANY thanks to Dr Whetstone for taking extra time out of her day to give Danny the surgery and care he deserved. And last but not least, thank you to the Prince family for seeing all that Danny deserves in life and offering to give him that and much much more.

UPDATE 4/19/11:

He has been eating 4 meals a day since surgery on Wednesday and seems to be growing stronger every day. I met w/ the vet this morning and the results are in... they are good and bad. He does not have lymphoma, but he does have intermediate to high grade invasive intestinal adenocarcinoma (here is a link for more info about it: http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/cancer/c_dg_adenocarcinoma_stomach_intestine_rectal). For this type of cancer, prednisone and time are all we can really do. The Dr says the length of time he has to live will depend on the strength of Danny. He will need routine follow up visits every few months at the vet to check for any regrowths/spreading of the cancer. His fight is not over. CCHS and he amazing adoptive home will see him though the good times and bad.

Please say a prayer for this sweet boy.
